Dedicated to the memory of Janet Karen Turner

This Candlelight Fund has been created in loving memory of Janet Turner, by her friend Sister Mairead. May Janet rest in peace. All donations made to the fund will be used to support CAFOD's work with poor and disadvantaged communities in Africa, a cause which Janet gave to lovingly and generously when she was alive. Janet was in her seventieth year when she died naturally of primary MS. She was totally paralysed for the last four or five years of her life and could only move her head and speak, although at the end her voice was also going. In spite of her disabilities she achieved the following: Co-Founder of Bethany Community which was set up so disabled people could live a religious life; out to daily Mass; corresponded with prisoners on death row, visited them in Texas on two different occasions and petitioned against their execution including visiting the US Ambassador in London; visited South Africa and supported a family there whose father was on death row; travelled to Cologne in 1999 on the Drop the Debt Campaign and to form a human chain around building where G8 were meeting; went to Ireland about twice a year; visited Lourdes several times; went to Rome for the Holy Year 2000 and had a photo taken with St John Paul which has pride of place in Bethany Community; visited the Holy Land in 2003; listened avidly to her talking books and classical music; through her possum control stayed in contact with her friends on the phone which she controlled herself by a shake of her head, remembered exactly on which page numbers were available; helped on the marriage tribunal for the diocese; enjoyed parties; helped many friends who were in financial difficulties and in many cases was never repaid; liked her malt whiskey; led small groups discussions and prayer; laughed, loved, suffered, lived life to the full; was totally and completely in love with JESUS CHRIST. Not for her assisted dying no matter how great was her suffering and frustration, she indeed died with a DIGNITY to be observed and admired.
